Personally I think Google has it figured out. Clean thumbnails with the quick pop on a hover to include the information with a look like the new layout.

This is a tough decision.
On one hand, the new layout spreads out all the pictures in a similar format, giving the advantage of equal visual fields for the pictures, so if you want to visualize better an impacting picture, you'll need to click on it to view it larger. The old layout has the ability to catch your attention to a specific picture given the layout.
Its a matter of taste actually, some photographers will prefer the old layout, some will prefer the new one. There will be no right or wrong format. Its just a matter of perception.
I myself like the ability to choose the format you like the most.
In the end what matters most is that this is not a dump and go site for pictures, I value any comments from all the skilled photographers to my pictures, because that's the way we learn something new every day and improve our art skills.
JT has made a terrific job with this site, kudos to JT!

Personally there is value to both layouts.
It really depends on what the user is doing.
I really like the idea of having the ability to switch between the two options.
Just my two cents...

I would prefer the new design; yes, it looks more like a database ( little malus); yes, the imagesize is smaller ( another malus), but I really dislike letters and text and so on in pictures, not given from the artist.
