No rest for the active. In my ongoing quest for continuous improvements, I have redesigned the way the gallery is presented. Don't worry it is still up in the air. Having said that, Please provide some feedback.

Should it stay like the original?

http://www.nikonimages.com/standardgallery.php?showall

Should it move to the new latout?

http://www.nikonimages.com/sg.php?showall

Or should I spend time coding to allow the user to select which layout they would rather use?

Update

I have added the ability to select the one you like. The choice is at the top right side of the standard gallery view. You can switch back and forth as you like. If this works, I will implement the feature in the other gallery pages when I have time.

It's Christmas. Please don't make me code

Looking forward to reading your feedback.

the square and magnifying glass are back.

Thank you very much, J. Torralba. I really appreciate the only way - with the aid of the red square - to scrutinize a picture in its uploadet size. I hope I didn't spoil too much of your holydays with my request.

Best regards from Norway,
Walter

J Torralba wrote:...I can see your concerns about the "Comments about my Photos"....

Don't really understand that one - I did NOT express any concerns about "Comments about my photos" - on the contrary, I liked it! I liked the way one could click a decent enlargment. This is the size of enlargment I would like to see on the "photo detail page" as well.

J Torralba wrote:...4thirds is kind of left behind a little and I push the updates to it eventually. The reason for the two magnifying icons was as follow. Originally, one worked with browsers that have java script disabled and the other didn't. Also, one would try to open the image in it's full dimensions while the other opened the image and provided scroll bars. I have done away with that on all the other sites except 4thirds and I guess I i will push that out now.

Well, don't push too fast, because I like is as it is now. Too late, it's gone...!
:o/

If you take away that second magnifying icon (red frame) in the 4ThirdsImages.com as well, you are doing exactly the opposite of what I like there. That red frame magnifying icon is missed in here as well.

Best regards,
Walter

P.S.:
By the way, J Torralba - from reading your answer to my question I get the impression that the whole navigating-process to be able to see a decent enlargment of a certain picture is a bit on the complicated side. But that's me. Don't mind me.

Walter let me see if I can explain the logic here.

In regards to the image size. There are basically 3 views of an image.

The thumbnail which is obvious.
When you click on the thumbnail you are directed to what I call the photo detail page. This is the page with the photo, the comments below and photo details on the right side. Above the details are 2 more thumbs for navigating to the next or previous photo.

The blue magnifying glass above the photo on the detail page appears when there is a larger version of the photo. That larger version can be much larger or just slightly larger than the photo with the magnifying glass above it. The reason for this is for maintaing page layout consistency while navigating to next or previous photos. Imagine how your page would jump all over the place if the photo you are viewing is 700 pixels wide and the next one is 2000. It just makes browsing more manageable for the viewer.

I can see your concerns about the "Comments about my Photos". What I have done there is given the user the ability to see comments about photos. By clicking on the thumbnail they see a larger version of the photo without any details. To see those photos in the Detail view you would have to click on the link that says View next to photo details. This was designed to originally let a user see various photos without having to come back to the page to see more comments.

4thirds is kind of left behind a little and I push the updates to it eventually.

Your feedback is always welcome and I take much of it into account when thinking of future enhancements.

My next enhancements is the ability to load images into your gallery by just providing a link to a url where you may have pictures. such as flickr or some other site.

The thing I miss the most here is some consistency and standard when it comes to viewing / showing pictures. You get to see enlargments of the picture in different styles and sizes, depending on WHERE you are.

For instance, when in gallery-mode (I presume it's called when you are looking at details of a picture (with all the information of the shot below)) - and want to see one of the displayed pictures larger, one can click the blue "enlagement-looking-glass-icon" above the picture and a new window with the picture is displayed, BUT the size is only marginally bigger then the one you clicked on, so what's the point?

On the other hand - If I choose the "Comments about my photos" or "Comments posted by me" from the top menue, the clicked thumbnail gets displayed in a new window in ORIGINAL SIZE - and this is what you are interested in! Bigger views to really scrutinize the quality of the picture.

Why is it that one does not get the same enlarged picture-view, when in gallery-mode (or whats it called...)?

I am also a member in the 4THIRDSIMAGES.com and there you can choose the enlargment in two ways (WHY?).
1.) With the same blue "enlagement-looking-glass-icon" above the picture displayed OR ..
2.) With the "red frame enlagment-icon" - which gives you a better enlargment in the pictures original upploded size.

Why the difference?
Why has this "red frame enlagment-icon" been removed from the NikonImages.com but kept on the 4ThirdsImages.com ?

This is the kind of consistency I am talking about.

Thank you, and...

Best regards from Norway!
:o)

P.S.: I apologize for my English and the helplessly awkward expalantions or namings of what is what, since I dont know the names you call the different windows.

You don't. That is a list of your photos with the options you can do with them. What you can do instead is goto http://www.nikonimages.com/standardgallery.php?puid=2203&showall

where that number is your userid.

Hi JT,

Thanks for making the effort and for consulting with us. I am good either way, although, like willfred, I find the "old" design to have a more modern look to it than the new. It seems that we might be in the minority, however, and if we are, I am perfectly okay with the new format. Happy holidays. - Mel
